Learning Process
When players begin experiencing a new game, they expect it to be engaging from the very start. A well-designed game should immerse players in a state of flow quickly—something that can only occur if players are not required to consult external manuals while learning to play. If the game provides all necessary instruction within the game world itself, players are far more likely to remain immersed and maintain the flow state.
Some may argue that integrating tutorials or gameplay explanations directly into the game is not essential, as players can easily access information through game databases, online forums, or walkthrough videos. However, relying on these external sources forces players to leave the game environment, which is both inconvenient and immersion-breaking. Moreover, this interruption can disrupt the flow state, reducing the overall quality of the gaming experience.
When teaching players how to play, it is crucial to remember that games are intended to challenge players. Therefore, it is neither necessary nor advisable to explain every aspect of the game in advance. Questions such as “What is the best way to defeat this boss?”, “How can one achieve the best time on the racing circuit?”, or “How does one craft the most powerful weapon in the game?” are examples of inquiries that the game should not answer directly. These represent tactical decisions that players should discover through experimentation and gameplay. While it is appropriate to explain basic game mechanics, the responsibility of solving complex challenges should rest with the player, encouraging exploration, creativity, and critical thinking.
