Incorporate Compatible and Feasible Concepts
During the development process, you will generate numerous ideas. Some of these ideas may initially seem highly promising, leading you to consider their implementation. However, it is important to remember that an idea that appears engaging on paper may not necessarily translate into an equally engaging experience during playtesting.
Therefore, each idea must be carefully evaluated to determine whether it aligns with the overall vision of your project. If an idea proves to be compatible, it should enhance the enjoyment of the game. Eliminate elements that are dull, redundant, or frustrating, and aim to deliver the best possible experience to the player. Below are examples of elements that should be discarded during the development process:
Concept art that, while visually striking, cannot be effectively translated into level designs that support engaging gameplay.
Impressive lighting effects that conflict with the intended atmosphere of the game.
Sound effects that are inconsistent with the game’s thematic direction.
Camera mechanics or controls that are unresponsive or disruptive to player immersion.
Boss encounters that are disproportionately difficult relative to the intended difficulty level.
Moreover, any new idea has the potential to compromise the coherence of your game design. It may detract from the excitement of the game or alter it in a way that deviates from your original vision.
When considering the addition of new gameplay mechanics, carefully assess whether they genuinely enhance the experience. For instance, envision a first-person shooter in which the targeting cursor briefly transforms into a crosshair each time the player hits a target. Is the motivation behind introducing this mechanic based on a genuine improvement to the gameplay experience, or is it simply a convention adopted from other games?
Even if a new idea appears to be ideal, it may not be feasible to implement due to limitations in time or budget. Generally speaking, the later in the development cycle a change is introduced, the more costly it becomes to implement. Consequently, if you decide to include a new gameplay mechanic, ensure that it will be used frequently enough to justify the time and resources required for its development. If it is unlikely to have significant impact or relevance, it may not be worth pursuing.
